Life with PlayStation coming this month, not last

So, July ended without the launch of Life with PlayStation as promised during the E3 keynote. The delay is due to “a few procedural matters” causing the launch to push into “August.” That means either today or more likely, nearer the 31st, PS3 users will get their hands on Sony’s new globe interface for accessing real-time content such as news and weather from around the world. Hoozah?

Tether your iPhone, wirelessly. Maybe. (updated with video)

Filed under:

We’re not sure how this one got past Apple’s App Store censors, but the clever kids at Nullriver have released what appears to be the first tethering solution for the iPhone. The $10 NetShare app is just a SOCKS proxy that links an ad-hoc WiFi network to the iPhone’s 3G or EDGE connection — and if we could get it to work, we’d probably think it was a fine, if hacky, solution to a major limitation of Steve’s baby. As it stands, though, the instructions are pretty sparse, and while we can get the app to recognize a connection, we’re not able to actually load anything. We’re not sure how long this one’s going to last — anyone else willing to give it a shot before it gets yanked?

[Thanks, Zoli; Warning, link opens iTunes]

Update: Aaaaand it’s offline. Shocking.

Update 2: We’ve added our own video hands-on after the break.

Asus Ultimate and Pro Fashion Netbooks

Asus Ultimate and Pro Fashion Netbooks

Ok, with Asus prepping itself to roll out a deluge of netbooks, it makes me wonder where the line between a netbook and notebook is drawn. After all, the Ultimate and Pro Fashion models aren’t performance slouches to say the least, featuring dual-core Intel Atom processors and expanded storage capacities. Word has it that one of the models (not too sure which one as it wasn’t revealed) will come with a four hour battery life, a 10.1″ widescreen LED backlit panel, and a 32GB SSD. With costs hitting anywhere from $700 to $900, you can get a decent budget notebook for the same amount with a larger screen, hard drive and even an optical drive thrown inside. Which camp are you on?

Video: MIT develops solar storage “nirvana”: energy crisis solved?

MIT is in a twisted, propeller-capped knot this morning heralding a new discovery it says will unleash a solar revolution. However, the “revolutionary leap” inspired by photosynthesis is not on the glamorous front-end of energy collection, rather, it’s related to a simple, highly efficient and inexpensive way to store that energy when the sun doesn’t shine. “This is the nirvana of what we’ve been talking about for years,” says Daniel Nocera, MIT neomaxizoomdweebie who with Matthew Kanan developed the unprecedented approach to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases using the sun’s energy. The gases can then be recombined later inside a fuel cell. The key components to the process are a pair of catalysts (one consists of cobalt metal, phosphate, and an electrode; the other, platinum) which produce the O and H gases at room temperature and in neutral pH water (i.e., tap water). While similar solutions exist for industrial use primarily, these are very expensive and require specialized environments.

“This is a major discovery with enormous implications for the future prosperity of humankind,” said James Barber, a leader in the study of photosynthesis at Imperial College in London. “The importance of their discovery cannot be overstated since it opens up the door for developing new technologies for energy production thus reducing our dependence for fossil fuels and addressing the global climate change problem.” Nocera concedes that further engineering is required to commercialize the approach but hopes to see it implemented in household fuel cell systems within the next 10 years. Apple Pulls iPhone Tethering App [Iphone 2.0]

netshare.pngA $9.99 iPhone tethering application called NetShare made a brief appearance in the App Store, but now it’s no longer available. The app purportedly let you use your iPhone’s data connection on your laptop by using it as a proxy server. Of course, you can tether your iPhone 2.0 for free by jailbreaking it.

Leaf rolls out wide frame AFi 10 camera system

Filed under:

It looks like those that found Phase One’s 60-megapixel P65+ camera a bit too much for them but Hasselblad’s 50-megapixel H3DII-50 somehow lacking may now finally have the answer they’ve been looking for, as Leaf has just introduced its new 56-megapixel AFi 10 camera system. This one’s main selling point is its 56mm true wide frame sensor that Leaf designed with DALSA, which promises to “take you to the edge of the medium-format frame.” Apart from that, you can expect a one frame per second capture time, exposure times up to a minute, light sensitivity from ISO 50 to 800 and, of course, some 171MB file sizes to impress your friends with. No word on a price and, quite frankly, we’re a little hesitant to ask.

Logitech To Make Guitar Hero Controllers

Logitech To Make Guitar Hero Controllers

Logitech is currently planning on developing and marketing premium instrument controllers for Guitar Hero World Tour, in time for the latest instalment that will make an appearance on the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and Wii platforms. Logitech will cater for all the consoles mentioned, and is compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour’s advanced feature set by enabling players to elevate their Guitar Hero jam sessions to full-fledged rock concerts. It would be interesting to see what kind of quality these peripherals are made out of, since Logitech doesn’t exactly rely on super cheap plastic that’s easily breakable. I’m drooling already.

Greatest Hits Get Even Cheaper

Greatest Hits Get Even Cheaper

Sony’s Greatest Hits collection for the PS3 is now selling at a cheap, cheap price (relatively speaking, of course) of $29.99, so for those of you who have yet to pick up Warhawk and a slew of other great titles, now’s the time to do so. What qualifies a game to fall under this category? Well, the title must have been on the market for 11 months and moved over half a million copies at the very least. Great for budget summer gaming fun.

MP3/Aromatherapy Entertainment Pod

MP3/Aromatherapy Entertainment Pod

Check out this concept of an MP3/Aromatherapy entertainment pod that would do well to help you wind down after a hard day’s work with tunes from an orchestra as well as your favorite aromatherapy scent. All you need to do is pop off the end cap, place the selected scent tablet and you’re good to go. Interestingly enough, the earphones function as delivery pathways for the odor. This unique concept has been dubbed “Sweet Honey” for obvious reasons, just make sure Winnie the Pooh doesn’t get too close to this one.

Nikon Updates D3 with More Memory

Nikon Updates D3 with More Memory

Nikon’s D3 DSLR will now receive a memory upgrade - at a steep price, of course. After all, as the Joker said, “If you’re good at something, never do it for free.” It doesn’t really apply verbatim in this case, but I hope you get my drift. Half a grand will see your D3 receive more continuous shooting buffer memory - hitting 36 shots from the previous count of 16. I wonder whether this is a ripoff considering the price you paid for the D3 in the first place, and now you’ll have to fork out even more for what’s expected to be there in the first place? The price won’t stop people from picking up the upgrade, that’s for sure.
