Dell To Dispose Off Factories

Dell To Dispose Off Factories

Dell is currently trying to sell all its factories to contract electronics manufacturers - at least that’s what the Wall Street Journal reported this morning. Apparently, Dell is keen to dispose of most, if not all, of its factories within one and a half years. As for the remaining factories, those will close, and Dell will take the outsourcing route where PC production is concerned. Contract manufacturers will be happy at this news, but what will happen to all those people working in Dell factories at the moment? The global economy isn’t looking to steady at this point in time, and with factories closing, the downward spiral ain’t gonna stop. Folks working in Dell factories throughout Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Ireland, India, China, Brazil, Malaysia and Lodz, Poland ought to take note.

AOpen AME-100 SATA Enclosure

AOpen AME-100 SATA Enclosure

AOpen has just introduced its 2.5″ SATA hard drive external enclosure known as the AME-100. It is constructed from aluminum and connects to your computer via USB 2.0, which means a maximum theoretical transfer speed of 480Mbps. Each purchase of the AME-100 comes with a USB 2.0 Y-cable, a leather HDD wallet, necessary screws and a screwdriver to get you started. It requires two USB 2.0 ports to plug into, where one is used for the power while the other is meant for data. No idea on pricing though.

LG Prada II Specifications Leaked

LG Prada II Specifications Leaked

LG has more or less finished their sequel to the Prada, unimaginatively known as the Prada II. This model will come with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard in addition to the following specifications (something we lacked in our earlier post) :-

  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE, dual-band HSDPA (850MHz/2100MHz)
  • 950mAh battery
  • 240×400 3.0? screen
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and VGA recording
  • Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Infineon MP-EH + M180 chipset
  • Motion sensor
  • FM radio

Hopefully the operating system is something worth using, as the iPhone has already proven - hardware specifications aren’t as important as the user experience and ease-of-use, just take a look at the DS Lite.

ezJam Combo Guitar

ezJam Combo Guitar

If you’re a fan of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, it makes perfect sense to get a cross-compatible peripheral that is the ezJam Combo Guitar - after all, you certainly can’t be playing both games simultaneously, and it makes much more sense to have just one device that can work with both games instead of splurging more money on two individual gaming guitars. The ezJam Combo Guitar comes with a port that plugs into the Wiimote whenever you’re rocking with Guitar Hero III on your Wii, while you get a built-in wireless transmitter that works just great with Rock Band. It will retail for $70 a pop, making it slightly more expensive compared to other third party solutions, but at least it works with two different yet similar games.

Zune Contact Concept

Zune Contact Concept

Adam Huffman has dreamt of the Zune Contact concept, hoping to see Microsoft go head-to-head with Apple in the phone arena sometime down the road. I’m not too sure whether that is worth the investment from the software giant, but it would be an interesting battle, that’s for sure. Hopefully the dud that is the Zune won’t be repeated in the Zune Contact, as this concept comes with a revamped user interface, a super slim body, a 5 megapixel camera and a full touch screen display - no idea if it supports multi-touch or not though. What do you think Microsoft needs to do to make an iPhone killer?

Rotator Doubles Up As Shower And Bathtub

Rotator Doubles Up As Shower And Bathtub

Ron Arad has thought up of a truly unique design that will help save space for folks living in cramped spaces, as the Rotator bathtub can be turned into a shower at your whim and fancy, simply by rotating along the wall in one swift motion. The fatter end of the Rotator at the bottom is when it is a tub, while turning it upside down will make it a shower - just make sure you’ve cleared up all the hair at the drainage hole before doing that lest your head gets clogged with more than just hair from your head.

One Laptop And Amazon Team Up

One Laptop And Amazon Team Up

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization has come to an understanding with Amazon to sell its extremely cheap laptops over the Internet from late November onwards, allowing folks to purchase the XO laptops for personal use or to donate to a school located in a developing nation. This program will begin later this November and will run for approximately a month long. Those who want to contribute to this altruistic cause but reside outside of the US are out of luck though. In related news, the OLPC is already working on a new generation of the XO laptop that should see the light of day in 2010.

Garmin Lifetime Traffic Is Ad-Supported

Garmin Lifetime Traffic Is Ad-Supported

Garmin might be offering a free lifetime traffic feature to the masses, but that comes at a “price” so to speak - it will feature ads.

“One gripe: The nĂ¼vi 755T comes with advertisements. My evaluation unit arrived with three preloaded vendors (BP, Walgreens, and Wells Fargo). When you access the traffic menu, one of these advertiser’s names always appears at the bottom of the screen. Also, from time to time, one of these ads will pop up on the map view screen (they won’t appear when you are in motion). A single tap of the advertisers’ name will perform a POI search for nearby retail locations. Unfortunately, you can’t disable these ads, but it’s likely that they help Garmin offset the cost of the live traffic information that it offers free.”

How much are you willing to pay to get rid of the ads, or are you fine with companies bombarding you with promotional material from time to time?

Buffalo MicroStation

Buffalo wants to lay claim to owning the first external solid state USB drive in the world - the MicroStation.
